This document is a compilation of facts being used to organize research on the John Morrow family of 1840 Ripley Co. MO and the attempt to trace them back to TN.

Note: List not in Priority order.
  1. Order Isaac B. Morrow service records. This is likely to be the son of John M. Morrow from 1850 Van Buren Co, and 1860 Pope Co. AR. His enlistment says he was born in Ripley Co. MO about 1840. This will help place John M. Morrow in Ripley Co. and solidify his connection to our known Morrow's John and Jesse.

    2. Status: On order since early June 1998 by T.R.Morrow Jr.

  2. Get copies of 1840 MO Census. Ripley and Wayne Counties. Surnames: Morrow, Brannum, ??
  3. Get copies of 1850, 60, & 70 MO Census. Ripley, Wayne, Butler, and Macon Cos.. Surnames: Morrow, Brannum, ??. Looking for William, David J., Isaac N., and Benjamin Morrow households. These are other circa 1840 Ripley Co. MO Morrow's.
  4. Research and gather more data on 1830 TN Census John Morrow candidates.
  5. Get complete list of John Morrow households on 1820 TN census.

Thomas Morrow 07/04/98 - I have combed the Fayetteville AR library. They do NOT have census detail data for MO. If nobody else has access to this info I will order from National Archives.

"Probable Facts" about Our John(s) Morrow

son: John M. b. NC? TN?

Joyce Hetrick 07/02/98 - I think we can safely say that our Jesse was born in NC in 1814: Proofs: all census say so, plus goodspeed, (except the one census in 1860 which is suspect for accuracy.ie. his age was off and it says KY which w2e have no other connection to.

  1. John Sr.the immigrant, probably came in the last wave in 1771-4, maybe as adult, maybe as child. Proofs: The scots Irish came in "waves" with most landing in PA, serving out indentures (or saving money) then going to the VA and then NC areas due to PA land prices. Any in the PA area at the time of the revolution fought if of age and able.
  2. JOHN Sr. being in NC in 1814 jives with the known history of the Scots Irish. The 1814-1820ish move to TN also jives with this history.
  3. Move in 1833 to MO jives with history and with Goodspeeds, etc.
  4. Therefore, we should find John Sr. In TN in 1830, maybe near the Harringtons, who also lived in TN after leaving Chatham NC---we might also look in Chatham if we find John in TN FIRST.

Thomas Morrow 07/04/98 - Facts on Jesse V. birthplace:

  1. 1850 Van Buren Co. AR census says TN. All data on this census seems to be in order.
  2. 1860 Conway Co. AR census say KY. The age is also wrong on this census. It appears that he did not answer the census questions himself.
  3. Goodspeed article on his son James Brannum Morrow says that he was born " a native of one of the Carolinas, and was born in 1814, but went, when a boy, with his parents to Tennessee" This book was published in 1891 after Jesse's death (around 1879).

Given these 3 pieces on data I am not sure that we can say certainly that Jesse was born in NC. Only one of the 3 data points (1850 Van Buren Co. AR census) came directly from Jesse himself and it says TN.. The 1860 census for him is full of errors and does not appear to have been answered by him. Goodspeed is a generation removed. There could be confusion of the place of birth because he did move as a child and the oral history got blurred.

Morrow, Isaac B. - enlisted as a Pvt in 4th Arkansas Cavalry 15 Feb 1864 Dardanelle, AR. age 24 born Ripley Co. MO.

Note:

1. This is probably son of John M. Morrow in 1850 Van Buren Co. & 1860 Pope Co. AR Census. The age matches the 1860 census but not the 1850.

Note: Joyce Hetrick 07/02/98 - WHERE ARE EARLIER KIDS BY LUCINDA? IN 1860? His age was wrong, he was actually 46. I didnt record house number etc.. Living with "Vernetta" age 21, and the two children, I didnt record the house number etc. so we need to re look at this.

  2. There is confusion over which John Morrow household this is. It could be Jesse V. and Georges father John or their brother(?) John (from 1850 Van Buren Co. AR census).
  3. The William Morrow in Wayne Co. is probably the same one who married Oma Brannum in June 1840. He is the only Wm. in Ripley and surrounding counties in 1840 census.
  4. The Ripley Co. Morrow's are in enumeration order. They all live next door to one another! No other Morrows in the county.
