Excerpts from "Our Harman Heritage": "The first records that is known on Zachariah Harman is in the Colonial Records of North Carolina, when his name is on a list of Regulators from Orange Co., dated about 1768. . . . During The Revolution, we know that he served in a civilian capacity as Commissioner of Confiscated Property, but some old letters say that he actually served as a soldier. There are no records of such in the Archives. Chatham Co. was formed in 1771 from Orange Co. and Zachariah Harman was one of its most prominent citizens. May 12, 1774 (Thursday) Pg14- Elisha Cain Esq. came into Court and produced a Commission from his Excellency the Governor appointing him Sheriff of the County of Chatham, Whereupon the said Elisha Cain entered into bond with Jedethan Haper, Mial Scurlock, Richard Kennon, Wm Lasiter, Zach. State of N.C., at or before the sealing and delivering of these presents, the receipt hereof is hereby acknowledged have bargained, sold, assigned and confirmed and delivered and by these presents do bargain, sell, assign, confirm and deliver unto the said Zachariah HARMON his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns all such part and share as the said Elijah Clark is entitled unto and to him belongeth for right of Hannah his wife, one for the neices and next of kin of Drury Harrington, late of Halifax Co., State of N.C., deceased, of and in the goods and chattels, negroes and other personal estate of the said Drury Harrington and of which he died possessed or was in anywise entitled unto and all the right title, interest, property, benefit, claim and demand whatsoever both at law and in equity of him the said Elijah Clark, in and to the same and every part thereof to have and to hold receive procure and take the said part and share of the said Elijah Clark of in and to the goods, chattels, negroes and personal estate aforesaid and all and singular other premises hereby assigned or intended so to be unto the said Zachariah HARMON to recover and obtain the matters and things herein before mentioned - the said Elijah Clark, hath made, ordained and appointed and by these presents, do make, ordain and appoint and in his stead depute the said Zachariah HARM0N irrevocably to be his true and lawful attorney for him and in his name but to the only proper use of the said Zachariah HARMON, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, to ask, demand, sue for, petition for, recover and receive of and from the administration, or administrators of the said late Drury Harrington who died intestate or any person, or persons, whom it may concern, all that part and share of the said Elijah Clark of and in the said personal estate which the said late Drury Harrington died possessed of or entitled unto, and all the said premises hereby intended to be assigned and upon receipt thereof or any part thereof, sufficient charges to make, give and execute and governally to do all other acts and things necessary for effecting the purpose aforesaid as fully as ratifying all and whatsoever the said attorney shall do or cause to be done in the premises.
