Excerpt from Marion T. Dickens family letter "Our Dickens Heritage": "URIAH DICKENS was the sixth son of the above Thomas and Mollie (Stevens) Dickens. He was born in 1802, in Chatham County, North Carolina. In 1833 he married Susan May and they moved to Gibson County, Tennessee. There he engaged in farming and had some interest in politics, we find him on the bond of the Constable and bonds in the guardianship of the Mayfield's orphans. One son had the overland mail contract from Humboldt to Memphis. They remained there in Tennessee until the Fall of 1860 when they moved to Conway County, Arkansas and settled near Springfield. Susan died in 1863. Uriah then engaged in the timber business and died in 1875 in Boone County. They had a family of six sons and five daughters, viz.: Thomas M. b.1834, Humboldt, Tenn d.1910 Tyresa 1835 " d.before 1889 Emily K. 1836 " d.before 1889 Erasmus R. 1838 " d.2 May 1919 Cassandra M 1840 " m. Morrow Uriah Gilliam 1852 " m.Mary Francis Polk George E. 1855 " d.before 1889 Four of his sons served in the Civil War. They exemplified that this was a War of brothers against brothers, for Thomas M and Francis Marion and William Louis Dickens enlisted and served in Company I of the Third Arkansas Cavalry Federal Troops and William Louis Dickens died while in the service and is buried with head stone 958 in the Federal Cemetery at Little Rock- and Erasmus R enlisted and served in Company I of the Second Arkansas Infantry, Confederates, from Newton-Pope Counties, under Colonels Thomas C Hindman and Daniel O Gavan."1 Uriah was born on 18 1802 at Chatham County, North Carolina. He was the son of Thomas Dickens and Molly Stevens. He married Sarah Teddar on 15 April 1825. He married Susannah May on 19 January 1826. They moved after 1850. He married Mary Bell circa 1866. Jessie was a lifelong farmer. He also served as Justice Of The Peace for some years in Conway County. Jessie was a member of Missionary Baptist Church. See article under James Brannnum Morrow.3 Jesse was born in 1814 at Tennessee. He was the son of John M. Morrow. He married Lucinda Brannum at Ripley County, Missouri, on 20 May 1835.4,5 Jesse was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census at Ripley County, Missouri. They moved circa 1847 at Ripley County, Missouri. Jesse V., George W., and John M. Morrow moved from Ripley County, Missouri to Van Buren County, Arkansas about 1847-48.. Susan was born in April 1849 at Tennessee, Gibson Co., Humbolt. She was the daughter of Uriah Dickens and Susannah May. She married James Brannum Morrow on 5 January 1881 at Conway County, Arkansas.4 As of 5 January 1881,her married name was Morrow.4 Her body was interred in 1909 at Kilgore Cemetery, Solgohachia, Conway County, Arkansas, at Kilgore Cemetery.3 Susan died in 1909 at in Arkansas. |

Erasmus was born on 4 February 1838 at Humbolt, Gibson Co, TN. He was the son of Uriah Dickens and Susannah May. Cassandra was born on 23 June 1840 at Tennessee, Gibson Co., Humbolt. She was the daughter of Uriah Dickens and Susannah May. She married Robert Maxwell Newberry on 26 September 1861 at Conway County, Arkansas. Cassandra died on 11 March 1925 at Center Ridge, Conway, Arkansas, at age 84. Her body was interred in 1925 at Center Ridge Cem, Conway, Arkansas. |
"Robert M. Newberry, a prominent citizen and farmer of Centre Ridge, is a native of Jackson County, Alabama, born in 1828, and is a son of James and Ann (Rhea) Newberry, who were born in Lincoln County, Tennessee, January 1, 1801, respecively. Married in Jackson County, Alabama, whither they had gone with their parents in an early day. There Mr. Newberry died August 1, 1840, a Cumberland Presbyterian. In 1858 Mrs. Newberry removed to what is now Faulkner County, Arkansas, where she married Presley Bennett, and died in 1866, also a Cumberland Presbyterian, John Newberry, the grandfather of our subject, was born in Ireland, but when a child was brought to the United States by his parents, who settled in Tennessee, where they probably died. John Newberry died in Jackson County, Alabama, in 1840. His wife was born in England. Grandfather Robert Rhea was a Tennessean by birth, but died in Cherokee County, Alabama, about 1845. He was of Irish, and his wife of German and English descent. She also died in Cherokee County, Alabama. Mr. Rhea was with Jackson in one of the earlier wars. The subject of this sketch is the eldest of seven children. On the death of his father the main support of the family developed upon him, thus depriving him of the advantages of an education. He came with his mother and one sister to Arkansas, and in 1861 was married, in what is now Faulkner County, to Miss Casandra M. Dickens, a native of West Tennessee; born in 1840. Her parents, Uriah and Susan Dickens, were natives of North Carolina, but after they married removed to Tennessee, and in about 1850, to what is now Faulkner County, where Mrs. Dickens died in 1863. Mr. Dickens died in Boone County, about 1875. Both were members of the Christian Church. To Mr. and Mrs. Newberry have been born nine children, five living, viz. : George E., Josephine, Tennessee Alabama, Robert B. , and Maxel H. In June 1862, Mr. Newberry joined the Third Trans-Mississippi Conferderate troops, and operated in Arkansas; fought at Prairie Grove, Helena and many minor engagements, as Orderly Sergeant. He left the army at Camden, in October, 1863, and, September, 1864, joined Company L, of the Third Arkansas Cavalry, of Federal troops, under Gen. Ryan's command, and fought in several skirmishes in Central Arkansas, and was discharged at Lewisburg, July 3, 1865, and returned to his family. Since 1858 Mr. Newberry has lived in different parts of Faulkner and Conway Counties, except two years, in 1871 and l ' 72 in Searcy County. In the winter of 1887 remove to his present farm of eighty acres at Centre Ridge. Was Postmaster at Centre Ridge in 1888 and '89. Is a Democrat in politics, and he and wife are members of the Christian Church. John C. Newberry, a brother of Robert M., was born October, 1829, and died January 29, 1864, in the hospital at Little Rock, after a short service in the Union army, in Company L, Third Arkansas Cavalry. The sisters are Mrs. Elizabeth A. Patton, Olivia C., widow of Mace Brindley, who was killed at Chickamauga, in the Confederate army; Martha A., Mary J., and Sarah E., all three deceased".2,2 Robert was born on 10 June 1828 at Larkinville, Jackson County, Alabama. He was the son of James Newberry and Ann Rhea. He married Cassandra May Dickens at Conway County, Arkansas, on 26 September 1861. His body was interred in August 1894 at Center Ridge Cemtery, Conway County, Arkansas, at Center Ridge Cemtery. Robert died on 17 August 1894 at Center Ridge, Conway County, Arkansas, at age 66. |
Francis was born in 1843 at Humbolt, Gibson Co., TN. He was the son of Uriah Dickens and Susannah May. Francis served in the military at Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, on 8 January 1864. He enlisted as a Private in the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry..3,4 He married Sarah J. William was born in 1846 at Tennessee, Gibson Co., Humbolt. He was the son of Uriah Dickens and Susannah May. He married Martha Unknown before 1864.2 William served in the military at Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, on 13 February 1864. William enlisted as a Private in the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry, Union Army..3 William died on 12 March 1864 at Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. His body was interred after 12 March 1864 at National Cemetery, Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, at National Cemetery. He died while in service of the Union Army is buried with head stone 958 in the National Cemetery.. |
Judith was born on 2 December 1827 at Tennessee, Humbolt. She was the daughter of Uriah Dickens and Susannah May. She married James Witt in 1845 at Gibson, Tennessee. Judith died circa 1861 at in Arkansas. |
"URIAH GILLIAM DICKENS was the tenth child of the above Uriah and Susan (May) Dickens. He was born 9 July 1852 at Humboldt, Gibson County, Tennessee. He came to Arkansas with his parents in the Fall of 1860 and they settled near Springfield, Conway County. While Uriah Gilliam was educating himself for the practice of medicine he made his living carrying the mail, mostly on horseback, from Springfield to Cave City, and when the Little Red and the White Rivers were at flood stage and could not be forded, of course, a boat was involved. While he was only about ten years old, and his father sixty, in the time of the Civil War they kept the home fires burning while the four older brothers were in the Armies and the fortunes of War swept back and forth over the homestead. He married Mary Frances Polk, the daughter of John Polk then in Polk County. She was born 5 August 1856 at Mt Mollis, Georgia. The marriage took place 20 October 1872 at Dover, then the County seat of Pope County. Mrs. Mary Frances (Polk) Dickens died on 6th November 1924, at Newport, Arkansas. Uriah Gilliam Dickens, after completing his literary schooling, began the study of medicine under Dr. Enoch Dennis and at the age of twenty-four enterred into practice at Old Hickory. Three years later he moved to Enola, Faulkner County, continuing his work as a Doctor and also engaged in farming in connection with his practice. He died 6th December 1911, at Dennard, Arkansas.
