Excerpt from Gail Shearin's website at: http://www.parsonstech.com/genealogy/trees/gshearin/SHEARIN.htm "John Shearin was born probably in Virginia, but in one of the eastern counties rather than in Brunswick County where his father settled during or soon after 1726. John's birthdate must have been about 1710, as he is known to have been old enough tin 1734 to obtain a grant that year of 236 acres on the opposite side of the Three Creeks from his father's grant in 1726 of 240 acres. This is revealed in a deed recorded in Brunswick Co., VA Deed Book 6, pages 487-490, covering the sale on 22 September 1760 by John Shearing and Lucretia Shearing, his wife, to Wood Tucker of 357 acres lying on both sides of the Three Creeks, "part of it is 240 acres on the east side of the Three Creeks that was formerly belonging to Joseph Shearing, and the other 1 17 acres part of the 236 acres by patent to the said John Shearing bearing date the XXVIlth day of January, 1734 in the 8th year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second". John and his family must have moved southward into North Carolina in 1748 as a copy has been obtained from NC State Archives of a grant of land to John Shearin by Lord Granville of 640 acres on Lyon's Creek. This area fell in Bute Co. when Bute was formed from the eastern part of Granville in 1764 and in Warren Co. in 1779 when Warren and Franklin Counties were formed from Bute. Lyon's Creek appears on some old maps in the northeastern section of Warren Co. It probably starts from springs at a point about one and a half miles north of Church Hill, a small village about four miles northeast of Macon, NC. It flowed northward from the springs, then turned eastward, into the Roanoke River. The distance from its origin to the river apparently was no more than two to three miles. It was the shortest of several creeks in the area that flowed into the Roanoke and is situated about midway between Jordan Creek and Hubquarter Creek. The valley through which Lyon's Creek flowed is now a finger, or inlet, of Lake Gaston formed in recent times when a dam was erected at Roanoke Rapids, NC. A 1974 official county map shows the inlet extending southward down to about a quarter mile from the headwater springs, but the name Lyon's Creek is not shown on this map. Most, if not all, of the 640 acres granted to John Shearin in 1748, described in the grant as "beginning on both sides of Lyon's Creek" probably is now under the waters of the inlet. John Shearin prepared his will on 10 May 1794. It was probated at Warren Co. November Court 1795, recorded in Will Book 8, pages 172-174. In his will he names six sons and nine daughters, all married. He also names five grandsons in his will but he had many other grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. One sentence in John's will that perhaps reveals something interesting about his nature reads as follows: "My desire is that my negro, Tom, may choose his master and not be sold as the other negroes are at public sale but to be sold by the executors to the master he chooses for as much as they can get". Will probated at Warren County November Court 1795, recorded in Will Book 8, pages 172-174." John was born circa 1710 at Virginia. He was the son of Joseph Shearin. He married Lucretia Unknown at Virginia, circa 1730. John died circa 1795 at Warren County, North Carolina. |
Information on Joseph Shearin and descendants from Gail Shearin's website. Excerpt from Gail Shearin's website at: http://www.parsonstech.com/genealogy/trees/gshearin/SHEARIN.htm "...in the book "Cavaliers & Pioneers - Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants", Patent Book No. 12, page 313, Joseph Shearing was granted "240 acs. (N.L.) Brunswick Co. on E. side of the Three Creeks; 7 July 1726. p.514". In Brunswick Co. Deed Book 6, pages 487-490, a deed is recorded in which, on 22 Sept 1760, a tract of land was sold including 240 acres located in Brunswick County on the east side of the Three Creeks that was granted to Joseph Shearin on 27 Jan 1734. (It is not known if this 240 acres is the same as was granted in 1726 or if he was granted an additional 240 acres in 1734 in the same location.) Date and place of Joseph's birth are not known but he probably was bom before 1690 as he was old enough in 1734 to have a grown son who received a grant on the same date of 236 acres on the west side of the Three Creeks. Joseph died in 1752 in North Carolina in the northeastern section of what is now Warren Co. A copy of his will has been obtained from NC State Archives. In the will, he mentions three children and also refers to "my son, Jehu (John) Peeples" who must have been his stepson thus indicating that he married the widow of John (Jehu) Peeples known to have been his neighbor on the Three Creeks in Brunswick Co., VA. The name is spelled Sharin or Sherin in Joseph's will, including his signature by X mark but in the court clerk's probate and recording endorsements the name is clearly spelled Shearin in two places."
