According to land records at the National Archives James settled in Tatumville, Saline County, Arkansas, W1/2 of SE Section 8 Township 1N Range 15W on 80 acres. The land is described as "timber, hilly, and rough farming". He said that he settled on the land in December of 1894 and had built a 16x16 log house, 30x26 log barn, smoke house, hen house, and corn crib. James also planted an orchard of 100 trees and had about 14 acres under cultivation producing a crop every year. His application No.20205 filed at the land office at Little Rock, Arkansas under Section 2289, Revised Statutes of the United States, was completed and approved June 15, 1901 and James' Homestead Certificate No.10055 was signed by President Theodore Roosevelt on January 17, 1902..
