Excerpt from Edith Boyer Scruggs "The House of Boyer": "William came to Johnson County, Arkansas sometime in the late 1830's along with his sisters and possibly with his parents. He took a land grant in 1839. In 1846 he enlisted to fight in the Mexican War with Company A, Battalion of Arkansas Volunteers under Captain P.B. Collins With his Honorable Discharge in 1847, at Fort Gibson, Cherokee Nation, he received 165 acres of bounty land located in Horsehead Township, Johnson County, Arkansas. In February 1862 he volunteered to fight in Company F, 10th Regiment, Arkansas Militia, of the Confederate States Army. Then again in October 1863 he enlisted in Company L, Hill's 7th Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry, of the Confederate States Army. In August of 1864 he was warned by neighbors that his farm was about to be robbed by bushwhackers. Other neighbors had been tortured. They hurriedly loaded a wagon and started for Little Rock, Arkansas, 112 miles away. Their home was burned behind them. He joined the Union Army on August 20, 1864. He was in Company I, 2nd Arkansas Infantry, United States Army. His wife and children were sent to Winona County, Minnesota by way of the Arkansas and Mississippi Rivers for the duration of the war. Mary returned to Johnson County, Arkansas around 1868 and rebuilt her home in the same location. He was transferred to Clarksville, Arkansas to serve in the Medical Corps at the Post Isolation (smallpox) Hospital. It was while nursing Federal soldiers there that he contracted smallpox and died."
